Winning the draw is the easy part. Under the National Lottery Act of 2005, the licensed operator must make every effort to find and pay its prize winners, but how long you have to come forward depends on the rules of the game you played, and the money that reaches you is net of withholding tax. Unclaimed prizes can roll back into the prize fund once at least 180 days have passed since the draw.

Result pages tell you which numbers came out. This report covers what comes after: who owes you the money, how long the claim stays open, and what the taxman takes before the naira lands in your account.

Who has to pay national lottery Nigeria winners?

The operator holding the licence does. The Act says the licensee shall use best endeavours to find and pay all prize winners, so the duty to chase up a winning ticket sits with the company as well as the player.

The Act also protects the pot those payouts come from. A national lottery must return at least 50 percent of proceeds to its prize fund. That is a floor on the prize pool across the game, not a promise about any single ticket.

Before you present a ticket, confirm that the company running the game actually holds a licence. Our report on lottery companies in Nigeria sets out who issues those licences since 2024, and the online lottery in Nigeria guide explains how to check an operator before you play.

How long do you have to claim a lottery prize in Nigeria?

There is no single federal deadline. The Act defines an unclaimed prize as one not collected within the claim period in the lottery rules, so each game's own rules set the window, and the ticket or the operator's terms are where you find it.

What the Act does fix is the operator's side of the clock. Once not less than 180 days have passed after a draw, the licensee keeps any prizes still unclaimed as part of the prize fund, where they go towards future prizes. So 180 days is the earliest point at which unclaimed money can be folded back, not a guaranteed grace period for every game.

Big winners who miss the window are not automatically shut out. A licensee may, at its own discretion, still honour legitimate jackpot claims older than 180 days. Note the words: discretion, and jackpot. A smaller prize claimed late has no such fallback in the Act.

The practical lesson is simple. Keep the physical ticket or the account record safe, read the claim period printed in the game rules, and do not sit on a win.

Which law covers your win after the Supreme Court ruling?

It depends on where the game is licensed. On 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court held that the Act applies solely within the FCT, which means the federal claim rules above bind lotteries run in Abuja.

Outside Abuja, check the licence on the game you played. The steps for buying a ticket from a properly licensed game are in our national lottery how-to report.

What tax comes off a Nigerian lottery payout?

Withholding tax comes off before you are paid. Under the federal withholding tax regulations of 2024, lottery and gaming winnings attract 5% for residents, 15% for non-residents, as of July 2024.

Lagos has moved on its own collection too. As of February 2026, the state deducts its withholding tax from net winnings at the point of payout on licensed gaming platforms operating in Lagos. In September 2026 the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, with the state's gaming authority, issued a public notice on withholding tax reminding everyone in lottery, gaming, betting and casino activity that the tax applies to winnings.

Why your NIN matters when you collect

The tax taken at payout is not lost money on your books. In Lagos the deduction counts as a tax credit to the player.

Players are required to give their National Identification Number under KYC rules. Have your NIN ready before you walk in with a winning ticket, and make sure the name on your account matches it.

Reader questions

How long do I have to claim a Nigerian lottery prize?

As long as the rules of that particular game allow. The National Lottery Act 2005 does not fix one federal deadline; it hands the claim period to each lottery's rules, and only after at least 180 days from the draw may the operator fold unclaimed money back into the prize fund.

Are lottery winnings taxed in Nigeria?

Yes. Federal withholding tax rules charge 5% on lottery and gaming winnings for residents and 15% for non-residents, and Lagos deducts its 5% from net winnings at the point of payout, as of February 2026.

Do I need my NIN to collect winnings?

In Lagos, yes. Players on licensed gaming platforms there must give their National Identification Number under KYC rules, and the same number is what lets the tax taken from a payout count as your credit.

Does the National Lottery Act cover a win outside Abuja?

Since the Supreme Court ruling of 22 November 2024, the Act applies only within the Federal Capital Territory. A win elsewhere falls under the lottery law and regulator of the state where the game is licensed.
